History of the Hub

Royal visit to the boxing club

The Hub was formed when Birmingham City Council invited local clubs and community organisations to take a lease of Holford Drive Playing Fields. The ground had no changing rooms and was generally run down. The Council did not have the resources to rebuild it and manage it afterwards.

Four anchor clubs — Aston Boxing Club, Holford Drive Tennis Club, Continental Star Football Club and Continental Star Cricket Club — joined Broadway Academy. Together they prepared grant applications that unlocked a £2.3 million investment. Capital works ran from 2012 to 2014. The site transferred in November 2013 under a Community Asset Transfer.

In December 2014 Prince William officially opened the sports hub. In 2016 the organisation received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award for local volunteer groups in the UK. Trustees including Lincoln Moses MBE attended a Buckingham Palace garden party, and Deputy Lieutenant Beverley Lindsay OBE presented the award in the West Midlands.

What the Hub is today

HOLFORD DRIVE COMMUNITY SPORTS HUB LIMITED is a community centre on 101 Holford Drive. Its mission is to improve health and wellbeing through sport and physical activity, and to give young people a safer place to belong. Volunteers still maintain much of the site.
